Editor Herta Feely talk on November 14, 2015

The Hellenic Writers' Group of Washington DC was fortunate to have editor Herta Feely give a lecture on writing and editing on November 14, 2015 at the Hellenic Center, 6506 Bells Mill Rd., Bethesda, MD 20817.

Mrs. Patty Apostolides, director of the writers' group, introduced Mrs. Feely, who is the founder and owner of Chrysalis Editing.

Mrs. Feely is also an author and ghostwriter, and has helped many authors' works. An enthusiastic speaker, Mrs. Feely shared with the group excerpts from one of her novels to pinpoint certain aspects of writing. She also covered the editing process, and this was followed by a question and answer period and booksigning. Overall, it was a pleasant and informative event for all who attended.

Hellenic Writers' Group Meetings in September

We hope you have had a good summer and are refreshed and relaxed! We had a chance to visit family in Florida this summer (Tarpon Springs and Clearwater Beach) and enjoyed the sun and the beaches.

Our writers' group is starting up again in September, 2015. Here are the following dates:

1) Hellenic Writers' Group meeting - Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Hellenic Center off of Democracy Blvd. It starts at 10:00AM and finishes around 12:00 PM.
      - We will share our writing
      - Discuss/plan  the upcoming "Meet the Author" for October.
      - Cover some writing techniques.
       - Writing exercise
       - Go over future events.
2) Poetry Group meeting - Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Hellenic Center right after the Writers' Group meeting. (12pm - 1pm)
        - Share our poetry
         - Go over poetry techniques
         - Discuss future "Poetry slam" event for November.
3) Hellenic Writers' Workshop meeting - Saturday, September 26, 2015 at the Hellenic Center off of Democracy Blvd. It starts at 10:00 AM and finishes around 12:00PM.
           - This workshop is limited to those who have written works that are longer than 20 pages (includes short stories, novels, memoirs, nonfiction) and would like to have them critiqued. It requires commitment of time, as we all will send in our works at least a week before the meeting to give everyone a chance to read and comment. The session meets at least once a month, if not more, from September - December. Then it will resume in March and go until June. This will allow everyone time to write and also bypass the inclement weather during Jan-Feb. If you are interested in joining this group, please email Patty at: patty@pattyapostolides.com
As always, there will be refreshments at these meetings, and plenty of smiles!
If you have a friend that you would like to bring along who might be interested in joining the group, please feel free to do so. We are bilingual and speak both English and Greek.

Looking forward to seeing you all again!
Patty

End of Year Meeting - June 20, 2015 at 11:00am

We will be rounding up the Hellenic Writers' Group season with an end of the year meeting/party on Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 am - 1:00pm at the Hellenic Center, Bethesda, MD.
This is the time to share our stories and our successes of the past years with
fellow members and friends. This is the time to plan for our future sessions.

Since its inception in Feb 2014, the Writers' Group and Workshop has hosted the Hellenic Literary Festival (featured 5 authors), seen one author become published (Lou Sarris), and helped two other authors finish their novels (Dr. Peter Paras, Patty Apostolides). It has also helped jumpstart new authors and poets who were rewarded with seeing their works grow and flourish. The comraderie, good will, and mutual respect I have witnessed throughout this year is quite wonderful, and I am proud to be a member of this group of talented writers!

Also, if you have any of your poems that you'd like to recite, or short story, bring it along too! Please invite anyone that you think might be interested in attending.

Please bring a finger dish, pastry, or drink to the event.

We hope to see you there!
Kind regards,
Patty Apostolides
Director

Writers' Workshop March 28, 2015

The Writers' Workshop will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Hellenic Center, Bethesda, MD.

The Writers' Workshop is open to Greek and Greek Americans who live in the Washington D.C. area and have written a short story, essay, nonfiction piece, or chapters of a novel. The group meets at least once a month, if not more. Its purpose is to help each writer grow in their writing, by reading and critiquing other people's works, and by receiving feedback on their own works.

At least 1-2 weeks before the meeting, each writer will submit their piece to Patty Apostolides (patty (at) pattyapostolides.com) who leads the group. She will then submit it to the rest of the writers in the group. The writers will read each work and bring their comments to the writers' workshop.

All works submitted to the group are confidential. We strive to respect and honor each others' works, in a safe and nurturing environment.

If you have not written any works, but would like to attend and read and comment, please email Patty Apostolides to put you on the mailing list.

Rescheduled Writers' Group Meeting

Due to the inclement weather, the Hellenic Writers' Group Meeting was rescheduled from Jan. 24 to Feb. 7, 2015.

The times are the same: 9:30 am for the poetry group, and 10:30 am for the Writers' group,
at the Hellenic Center in Bethesda, MD.

POETRY GROUP

9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
Feb. 7, 2015

This is a new group that is forming, and will meet monthly. We invite all Greeks and Greek American poets and wannabe poets to attend. Our goal is to provide a supportive and inspiring environment for poets, with the end result of publishing an Anthology of poetry by our local poets. This will be a first for us, and hopefully the beginning of many, many poems to come!

Poetry can take many forms, with traditional poems that rhyme, to short poems, like haiku, to free verse. It is up to each poet how they want to express themselves. Bring your poems to share and read out loud.

WRITERS' GROUP
10:30-12:30PM
Feb. 7, 2015

This group began a year ago and meets monthly at the Hellenic Center. We strive to create a learning environment, with many meetings that include classes on the craft of writing, as well as writing exercises. Writers can share works that they have written. Some of these works and poems will show up here on the blog.

All meetings are conducted in English.

Hellenic Writers' Group Meeting Jan. 24, 2015

The next Hellenic Writers' Group Meeting will take place on Saturday, January 24 at the Hellenic Center in Bethesda, MD.

This meeting will be a little different from the others because it will start at 9:30 instead of 10:30am.

The reason for the early session, is that we are asking all Greek or Greek American poets who have written poetry in English to attend at 9:30.  Patty Apostolides is organizing a poetry group with the goal of eventually publishing a Poetry Anthology Book with poems from the group. This is a new subgroup of the writers' group. If you haven't written poetry but would like to learn, you are also invited to sit and listen to the poets recite and talk about their poetry.

At 10:30 am, we will have our regular meeting, which will include a session on the craft of writing, as well as a writing exercise and miscellaneous topics.
